Happy 1st Birthday, My Sweet Boy

Aaron, today you turn a year old. I know it's so cliche to say this, but this past year has gone by so fast. Well, except for those first couple months. Between learning how to breastfeed (I quickly figured out that you can read every book in the world and still be very, VERY unprepared for the real experience) and the sleep deprivation, I thought my world was slowly crumbling down around me. I have never known pain, frustration and fatigue like I experienced during those first couple months. In essence, my world was crumbling down around me - the old world that I once knew. Eventually, we started to figure each other out and I haven't looked back since. You are such a joy in my life that I now can't remember what life was like without you (a lot more uneventful, I'll tell you that for sure!).

This new life also brings with it some emotions that I have never felt so strongly before. One would be that fierce Momma Bear protector mode that moms will go into if they sense that their children will be harmed in any way, whether it be emotionally or physically. I have never considered myself a confrontational person, but if you do anything to hurt my Aaron, you're goin' down! Another emotion that I'm having is worry. Am I feeding you the right foods? Are you being adequately stimulated emotionally, physically, spiritually, etc.? Am I raising the next Charles Manson (I've got to stop watching so many crime shows)? A third emotion that I feel, when I allow myself to feel it, is fear. I love you so much that it frightens me. Every once in a while I think about what might happen were I to lose you. When I do this, my brain becomes so traumatized that the thought is quickly disregarded. I have never felt that way before in my entire life and it can sometimes be crippling.

You are sleeping right now, my precious boy. We have had a long day of birthday fun. The day started out VERY early for you for some reason. You woke Mommy and Daddy up at 4:30 a.m. What's up with that? I tried putting you in bed with us so that you would maybe sleep a couple more hours, but you were too excited for that. We went into the living room and watched Little Einsteins and played with the gigantic singing balloon that I bought for you until it was time for breakfast. You then went down for a nap (and Mommy did too!).

When you got up from your nap, Daddy made us yummy pancakes and we spent the rest of the day playing and napping. We needed our rest because, to celebrate your birthday, your Daddy and I decided to brave Chuck E. Cheese's! Yahoo! We had a great time. Your best friends, Coley and Jalyn, met us there and we ate pizza and cupcakes with little Elmo rings on them! Coley and Jalyn gave you an awesome bubble making machine for your birthday and I can't wait to take you out in the backyard to play with it! After we ate, we played in the Toddler Zone. We rode the rides and crawled through the jungle gym. Your daddy and I even had our picture taken with you! I think you had a good time because you were so worn out when you got home!

By the way, before we left for Chuck E. Cheese's, Daddy turned your car seat around so that you can now face forward! Yay! You're such a big boy!

All in all, I think you had a good first birthday, even though I know you really had no idea what was going on. Mommy and Daddy are looking forward to what the next year brings!

Touchdown!

Football season starts in less than three months, so we are getting Aaron prepared. He is, afterall, our child and without football, we would perish. He has mastered Touchdown; now we need to work on new calls like False Start and Tripping (just because the call for Tripping makes us have giggles). Check out his new skills!

Aaron's First 1st Birthday Party

While Aaron and I were visiting family a couple weeks ago, we celebrated his 1st birthday for the first time so that my family in Missouri could share it with us. Bill's family will be here in Washington visiting starting in about a week and a half, so this is when we plan on having Aaron's second 1st birthday party. No, he's not spoiled! Everyone gets two birthday parties! Didn't you know that? Anyway, here are some pics of Aaron's birthday party, Missouri-style.

The party decorations. Airplanes, of course! Do you think this kid's going to be brainwashed?
The cake I made for him, sweetened only with apple juice concentrate and unsweetened applesauce. Yeah, just call me Martha Stewart!
No cake smashed in the face with this boy! He's way too prissy for that! I actually had to cut up his cake before he even would take a bite! By the way, check out the little piggies! It was so hot in Missouri when we were there that this was the first time Aaron went without socks for like days on end! We didn't even travel to MO with sandals. I had to make an emergency stop at Wal-Mart to get him a pair!
The ice cream cake that I bought from Dairy Queen for everyone else. I actually couldn't stomach Aaron's cake! I needed sugar!
Our Missouri peeps - from left, my Aunt Julie, my Granny, my sister Bethanie holding Baby Stiehl and Paul, Stiehl's daddy.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Coley!!

And here it is - the reason why I love my Coley-girl so much! Who can resist the cuteness?!

Heartache

Does his impending entry into toddlerhood mean that he's going to start slowly breaking away from me? Will he need me as much anymore?

Oh, wait. Here he comes...

It Had To Be Done

My sister Bethanie finally broke down while I was visiting in Missouri and cut Baby Stiehl's hair. Who knew that a five-month-old would actually need a haircut? He did, though, and I think it made a world of difference!

Playing Cards

"You better not be cheating me, Aunt B..."

"You either, Emilie. I've got my eye on you!"

More Aaron Crack

I guess I was mistaken in my earlier post when I mentioned that the only T.V. program that will keep Aaron interested more than a few minutes was Little Einsteins. I figured out this week that "Deal or No Deal" has the same zoning-out effect, specifically the briefcase chickies.

Go, Baby Stiehl, Go!

My nephew Stiehl turned five months old yesterday and has started to roll over like a champ. At first he would tease his mommy and only roll over for the people at his daycare, but now he likes to show off his new skill to anyone that will watch! Check it out!

Aaron Loves Cousin Stiehl

Aaron is completely fascinated by my nephew, Baby Stiehl. I think he's so used to being surrounded by kids that are older and bigger than him that when he's around someone younger and less mobile, he doesn't quite understand it. Of course, he also loves to touch Stiehl's hair. I mean, who wouldn't? You think maybe he's compensating for his own lack of hair?

What a Difference Seven Months Makes...

Aaron and I are back in Missouri right now visiting my family. We will be here for the next week and a half. I took a great picture of Aaron at the Denver airport during our layover before our flight to St. Louis and got to thinking about how much he's changed in the past seven months or so since his first airplane ride last October.

October 2005
May 2006
One obvious difference is that he's able to stand now instead of just lay there. I can remember back in October how much he hated tummy time and I couldn't believe that I was able to get a picture of him with his head up and even a little smile on his face. This time I sat him down on the floor in the terminal and almost had to run to keep up with him!

Another obvious difference is his hair! He doesn't look quite so much like a cue ball anymore!

The Saddest Thing Ever...

Note to self: If he's trying to take snoozes while strapped in his highchair during dinner, it might be time to move Aaron's bedtime routine back just a little bit.

Mini Santa

Can you tell it's laundry day?

Love the Aaron Giggles!

Grandma and Grandpa Q bought Aaron this cork gun in San Antonio during our Spring Break trip. I'm not really a big fan of toy guns, but someone had to buy it for him after the initial reaction that it got. Watch the video to see what I mean!

Happy Birthday, Poppy!

We love you!

Aaron's New Best Friends (and Mine Too!)

Aaron has reached another milestone - he has started to notice the big box that makes noise and lights up and can captivate Mommy and Daddy for hours on end (well, it used to, before he came along). That's right - he has taken notice of the T.V. So far the only show that will keep him captivated for more than a few minutes is Little Einsteins, but you should see his face light up when it comes on! It's heaven! The show follows four school-age children and their rocket ship as they complete "missions" that take them all over the world. The show also showcases famous artwork and music.

Daddy has already implemented an Elmo embargo (he says Elmo's voice is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard), so I figured this would be the next best thing to Sesame Street. I've set our TiVo so that we can watch it everyday while we eat breakfast. I'm afraid that Daddy's going to have to realize, however, that I'm just buying time. Aaron is going to like who he likes; I don't think we'll have that much say in the matter!
